The invention relates to an indexing device with a first crown gear (18) arranged on a first annular body (14) secured to an indexing table (12), a second crown gear (24) arranged on a second annular body (20) secured to a fixed pillar (22), a third crown gear (32) arranged on an axially movable third annular body (30) which can be taken out of and into engagement with the other annular crown gears (18, 24) by means of a hydraulically operable lifting device and a lowering device, and a radial bearing (26, 28) supporting the pillar (22) so that it can rotate on the indexing table (12), in which the lifting device has at least one lifting piston (70) which is fitted to move axially inside the pillar (22) and operates with the third crown gear (30). As the lowering device can be hydraulically operated and has at least one hollow chamber (46) which can be filled with fluid and is bounded on the one hand by the third crown gear (30) and on the other by a fourth fixed crown gear (54) which engages in an annular groove (57) in the third crown gear (30) to form a guide (55) for moving said third crown gear (30), an indexing device is provided which is compact, economical to produce, easy to fit and maintain and reliable in operation.
