The sludge is heated and steam sparged to temp. 70-90 deg C. Coarse components, > 3 mm, are sieved out. Next, in the no. 1 dryer, heat is supplied through a vertical arrangement of heating discs. Fluid components, esp. water, are driven off. An identical no. 2 dryer then separates the high boiling components, at pressure 10-100 mbar. Vapours leaving the no. 1 dryer, enter fractionation column No. 1. High boiling components are extracted from the sump, and the low boiling substances are supplied via a partial condenser, into no. 2 column. The low boilers are removed as its head prod; the sump prod. is a part-purified water. In addn. to the method described suitable plant to execute it is also claimed.
