An inverter apparatus has a forward AC-DC converting unit 5, a regenerative power converting unit 4 having circuit arms, each being a parallel connection of a switching element ad a diode, in a bridge circuit 12, a DC voltage output from the forward converting unit 5 being inverted by the regenerative power converting unit 4 into an AC voltage which is returned to the AC power supply 1, and a plurality of inverter units 9A, 9B controlling respective motors 3A, 3B are provided on the DC output side of the forward converting unit 5, and in each of these units, there are arms, each being a parallel connection of a switching element ad a diode, in a bridge connection. The arrangement can improve utilization efficiency of a diode bridge of a inverter apparatus and a transistor bridge of a power regeneration apparatus when the inverter enables regenerative braking in applications where travel and elevation are handled as one set, e.g., an automated storage/retrieval system. A resistor 10 for limiting regenerative peak current and a current returning diode 71 are provided.
