<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove SO2 from a stream of gas by bringing the stream of gas into contact with a liq. absorbent that is a non-cyclic sulfone or a non-cyclic sulfonamide expressed by respectively specified formulae and separating the formed SO2 enriched absorbent from the stream. SOLUTION: A stream of gases is brought into contact with an SO2 absorbing amount of a liq. absorbent comprising a non-cyclic sulfone expressed by formula I or a non-cyclic sulfonamide expressed by formula II [in formulae I and II, R, R', R" and R"' are each a primary, secondary or tertiary alkyl or alkaryl group wherein the alkyl moiety has 1-20 carbon atoms and R" and R"' may also be hydrogen, and the non-cyclic sulfone expressed by formula I and the non-cyclic sulfonamide expressed by formula II are substantially insoluble in water], and the SO2 enriched liq. absorbent is separated from the stream of gases. The water-insoluble non-cyclic sulfone or non-cyclic sulfonamide may be used as a highly effective SO2 absorbent alone or by combination with a non-volatile carrier solvent.</p> |
