PURPOSE: To obtain the subject polymer in high yield and high selectivity by using a catalytic system composed of a combination of a chromium compound, an acid amide or an imide compound and a metal alkyl compound. CONSTITUTION: This method for producingα-olefin oligomer, especially composed mainly of ethylene to 1-hexene is to use a catalyst system comprising a combination of (A) a chromium compound such as chromium (IV) t-butoxide, chromium (III) acetylacetonate orβ-diketonate salt of chromium, (B) an acid amide or an imide compound of the formula (M1 is H or a metal of IA, IIA, IB and IIIB of the periodic table; R<1> and R<2> are each H, a 1-30C alkyl, an alkenyl, etc., or R<1> and R<2> together forma ring) and a metal alkyl compound such as an alkylaluminum compound.
