NO is completely recovered from the waste gas of ammonium nitrite production by absorbing the nitrous fumes in a first stage in an ammonium carbonate and/or ammonium bicarbonate solution to form ammonium nitrite solutions, absorbing the resulting waste gas containing carbon dioxide in a second stage in an ammonia solution to form ammonium carbonate and/or ammonium bicarbonate which is/are recycled as such into the first absorption stage.
