PURPOSE: To obtain the composition consisting of a new 3-pyrrollne-2-one derivative andα-(β-naphthoxy)propionanilide and capable of applying at an arbitrary time and keeping controlling effect against major paddy field weeds for a long time owing to the synergistic effect of the components. CONSTITUTION: This herbicide composition for paddy field is obtained by compounding a new 3-pyrrollne-2-one derivative expressed by formula I (X is Cl, F or Br; Y is H, F, Cl, or methoxy; Z is H, F, Br or Cl; Q is H or F) withα-(β-naphthoxy)propionanilide. The herbicide composition can apply in an arbitrary time of a period from pre-emergence of weeds before transplantation of rice to growth of weeds and major paddy field weeds can be controlled over a long time by one application. 3-Pyrroline-2-one derivative of formula I is obtained by treating an amide derivative of formula II with an adequate base and allowing to proceed intramolecular aldol condensation reaction. In the composition, the compounding ratio of the component B is preferably 1-100 pts.wt. based on 1 pts.wt. of the component A.
