PURPOSE: To provide a method and a device for sensing existence and the direction of a child restraining seat, and preventing development of a related air bag when existence of a rearward child seat is detected at the time of collision of a vehicle. CONSTITUTION: A device 20 to prevent actuation of an air bag restraining device 25 in a vehicle is provided with a weight sensor 36, a distance sensor 42, and a seat belt payout sensor 66. A controller 22 is operatively connected to the sensor 36 and the air bag restraining device 25. When the sensor 36 senses a rearward facing child seat 46 existing on an occupant seat 40 by sensing a weight of an object less than a specified value, a distance to the object on a seat 40 less than a specified value, and a seat belt payout greater than a specified value, the controller 22 prevents actuation of an air bag. |
