PURPOSE: To obtain a lactone polyol which is useful as a starting substance for polyurethane because it is excellent in flexibility and resistance to hydrolysis by effecting the ring-opening addition polymerization of (non)substitutedδ- valerolactone under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION: In presence of a tertiary amine which has 11 or larger pKa value and bears no active hydrogen in the molecule such as 1,8- diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undecene-7, a (non)substitutedδ-valerolactone such asβ- methyl-δ-valerolactone is polymerized through ring-opening reaction using a polyol such as a polyether polyol, polyester polyol or polycarbonate polyol as an polymerization initiating agent to give this lactone polyol.
