PURPOSE: To obtain β-alumina excellent in strength and durability without reducing specific resistance by incorporating oxide of a rare earth element into a specified β-alumina forming oxide. CONSTITUTION: Oxide of a rare earth element is incorporated into a β-alumina forming oxide consisting of aluminum oxide, sodium oxide and lithium oxide by 0.5-5 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt., in total of them to obtain the objective β-alumina electrolyte. In the standard compsn. of the β-alumina forming oxide, the weight ratio of aluminum oxide:sodium oxide:lithium oxide is 90.4:8.85:0.75. Even when the ratio is varied by about 10-20%, difference in physical properties is hardly produced and an oxide having such a varied ratio may be used. By the resultant, compsn. of β-alumina, durability as an electrolyte for a cell and the reliability of the cell can be improved. |
