PURPOSE: To impart functions good in durability to a synthetic fiber without roughly hardening the fiber by coating the surface of the synthetic fiber with a solution containing a function imparting agent for the fiber dispersed in an uncharged state in a solution containing a metallic alkoxide and then gelatinizing the metallic alkoxide. CONSTITUTION: This method for imparting functions to a synthetic fiber is to coat the surface of the synthetic fiber such as a polyester or an amide fiber with a solution prepared by dispersing a function imparting agent for the fiber, e.g. a vegetable extract, an animal protein, an antimicrobial agent and a deodorant (e.g. octacarbonyliron phthalocyanine, dimethyl phthalate or an organic silicone-based quaternary ammonium salt), an aromatic compound, a compound having water absorptivity or hygroscopicity, a thermal storing agent and an exothermic agent, a water repellent or an ultraviolet light absorber in a solution containing a metallic alkoxide of the formula [M is a metallic element; R is a 9-20C organic group; R<1> is an alkyl or an acyl different from R; (m) is >=1; (m+n) is the oxidation number of the metal], especially N-phenyl-γ- aminopropyltrimethoxysilane in an uncharged state and then gelatinizing the metallic alkoxide. Thereby, excellent functions are imparted to the synthetic fiber. |
