PURPOSE:To shorten time required for focusing by projecting the light from an auxiliary illuminating device to plural focus detection areas and performing the focus detecting operation with respect to only the focus detection area where the quantity of reflected light is largest. CONSTITUTION:A focus detector has plural focus detection areas M, R, and L, and illuminating luminous fluxes 6a-6b which illuminate respective focus detection areas are projected to an object from a light source 4 of the auxiliary illuminating device for focus detection, and reflected luminous fluxes 5a-5b from the object are received by a focus detecting module 2. Quantities of reflected light in respective focus detection areas received by the module 2 are compared with one another by a comparing means. Since there is much probability that an object at the shortest distance to be a principal object is included in the focus detection area where the quantity of reflected light is largest, the focus detection area where the quantity of reflected light from the object is largest is selected, and the focus detecting operation such as distance measuring arithmetic and focusing is performed only for the selected focus detection area. |
