The flat screen is made up of micro-point cathode (1) and rear anode (2) separated by a vacuum gap (4). The rear screen is shorter than the front, and has a longitudinally side mounted tubular section (7). One end of the tubular section is attached to a pump to form a vacuum between the screens, and after pumping is completed a larger getter section (5) can be inserted to maintain the vacuum. Light is introduced to the screen through a slot in the tube side.
