Prepn. of 2,5 furan di:carboxylic acid

Prepn. of 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid (I) comprises mixing mucic acid (II) with a 37-85% aq. soln. of mineral acid to give 50-250 g (II) / l, then heating at 100-140 deg C for at /- 1 hr. and separating out (I). The mineral acid is pref. in the form of a 45-55 wt.% aq. soln. of hydrobromic or phosphoric acid. The reaction is pref. carried out using 60-80 g/l of (II) at 100-120 deg C for 1-10 hrs.
