The regulator enables the rotational speed of the motor (6) to be evaluated by a circuit (17) which counts the signals emitted by a detector (8), and the number of its revolutions is calculated (10) from this speed. The torque exerted on the steering column is measured (4) in conjunction with the road speed (5). A CPU regulates the input and output signals and checks for defects in the detecting element and circuit. If no speed signal is forthcoming while rotation of the motor is evidenced by its current and torque detection circuit (15), a relay (13) is de-energised (12) to stop the motor.
