Prepn. of 2,5-furan dicarboxylic diester (I) comprises mixing mucic acid (II), an alcohol ROH and a mineral acid in a mucic : mineral acid molar ratio of 1 : 0.04-1 and a mucic acid : alcohol molar ratio of 1 : 0.0133-0.5. The mixt. is heated at the b.pt. of the alcohol. Unreacted ROH is eliminated and excess mineral acid added to achieve a mucic : mineral acid molar ratio of 1 : 40-100. The mixt. is then stirred at 10-50 deg C to form the diester (I) which is separated out. R = 1-3C alkyl.
