The trowelled mass (48) is applied in paste consistency to part of the coated surface (46) in the form of parallel and adjoining or overlapping level strips (63) to give ribs of mortar (64) proud of and parallel to the mortar strip (63). The ribs come in trapezoidal or triangular section, the trowelled substance being dressed twice over in opposing directions to form the rib shape (64). The visible concrete face should be sprayed with high pressure water to clean it prior to trowelling, and a reinforcing mat is embedded in the trowelled mass before the rib is dressed to shape. The trowel (34) dressing edge (40) has an open-edged recess (42) in triangular or trapezoidal section and set off-centre in the trowel edge (40) in a distance ratio of (1:3 to 1:10) in relation to the trowel edges (60) adjoining the dressing edge. The trowel has a straightedge (52) to be positioned optionally at a vertical distance from the trowelled surface (46), and furnished in addition with a trowel guiding edge (62).
