A solid catalyst for olefin polymerisation is obtd. by mixing: (1) a cpd. of formula Me<1>R<1>p(OR<2>)qX<1>4-p-q where Me<1> = Ti, Zr or Hf; R<1>, R<2> = 1-24C hydrocarbyl; X<1> = halo; p, q = 0-4; p+q = 0-4; (2) a cpd. of formula Me<2>R<3>m(OR<4>)nX<2>z-m-n where Me<2> = Gp. I-III element; R<3>, R<4> = 1-24C hydrocarbyl; X<2> = H or halo; if X<2> = H, then Me<2> = a Gp. III element; m, n = 0-z; m+n = 0-z; (3) a cyclic organic cpd. with conjugated double bonds; (4) a modified organo-Al cpd. with Al-O-Al bonds; and (5) a Si oxide and/or Al oxide with (A) a particle size (sieve method) of 20-150 mu , (B) a specific surface (BET) of 150-60 m<2>/g, (C) a pore vol. (Hg penetration method) of 0.3-2.0 cm<3>/g in the pore radius range (a) of 18-1000 Angstrom (A) and a ratio of pore vol. in the range (b) 50-500 A to pore vol. in range (a) >50%, (D) an apparent specific density (JIS K6220-6.8) of not less than 0.32 and (E) a content <= 30% of particles with a size of <= 50 mu after ultrasonic size redn. for 20 mins. at 40 KHz and 35 W of particles pre-graded in the size range of 53-75 mu by sieving (degree of ultrasonic size redn.). Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of polyolefins by homo- or co-polymerisation of olefins in the presence of this catalyst.
