The sheets are fed in a direction at right angles to the movement of a perforated suction belt (13, 15). the belt is overlapped by a lateral stop (6) movable to either side on a traverse (12). A fan (19) in a suction box (16) creates a partial vacuum in an opening (17) below the upper strand (13) of the belt. The cross-sectional area of the opening increases in the direction of movement of the belt as a result of the action of a slider (8) whose controlling edge is inclined at an adjustable angle to that direction.
