<p>A power-saving method for driving an LCD device (20), include a series of multiplexers (78, 80, 82) coupled to the columns (46, 49, 51) of the display (20). The multiplexers selectively couple each of the columns to a common external storage capacitor (66) during a portion of each row drive period for discharging each of the pixels in the selected row of the LCD (20) to a median bias voltage. During the remaining portion of each row drive period, the multiplexers (78, 80, 82) selectively couple voltage drivers (76, 84, 86) to the columns (46, 49, 51) of the LCD for applying a desired driving voltage to each column having alternating-polarity driving voltages. For active matrix LCD panels, a multiplexer (124) selectively couples the backplane (130) of the display panel to either an external storage capacitor (134) or to an alternating-polarity backplane driving voltage (122) during each row drive period.</p> |
