The ignition switch of a type used in road vehicles has a housing formed from two main parts (2,3) and located at the centre is a rotor element (4) and this is formed with a number of projecting cam surfaces that are used for operating the contacts. The movable contacts (13) are mounted on leaf spring carriers (8) that are fixed (5) cantilever fashion to a central block. Each carrier has a profiled section (8b) that moves against the surface of the rotor when turned by the ignition key. Movable contacts engage the fixed contacts.
