The method involves the pipe (2) being cut through at two opposite ends, after which a bypass (53) is formed across the cut (46). The pipe is then sealed off at the junction (54), the seal (49) allowing flow from the pipe to the bypass, the cut (46) being then shut off. Oxygen is excluded during all the operations if necessary. A sluice valve can be used, having a body with a top section and two bottom ones detachable from half-shells secured to the pipe. The top part incorporates a body with sluice chamber.
