The prior art includes methods and devices for coating webs of paper or cardboard (2) in which an excess of coating material is first applied to the web (2) by an applicator (1) and the excess subsequently wiped off by a dosaging device (9). The invention calls for the web (2) to be guided so that, over at least part of the distance between application and wiping off of the coating material, the web travels along a concave path with its axis of curvature running parallel to the web (2) and perpendicular to the direction of travel of the web on the coated side of the web at a certain distance from this coated side. This ensures that, at very high web speeds, the coating is applied uniformly.
