Decontamination of soil or building waste contg. hydrocarbons to allow re-use comprises mixing the soil or waste with rubber particles, pref. from scrap tyres; placing the mixt. in a container after leaving for hours or days; treating with at least twice the vol. of water and stirring, so that light particles contg. hydrocarbon are discharged; and drying, giving soil or waste with a lower hydrocarbon content and modified structure.
