<p>Aqueous compositions comprised of a major amount of water and a minor amount of a polymerizable compound based on N-acryloyl-piperazine are provided. Such compounds have formula (a) wherein: R?1, R2, and R3¿ are each independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and lower alkyl; B is a linking group selected from the group consisting of carbonyl, sulfonyl, amide, and carboxyl; n is one or zero; R4 is a radical selected from the group consisting of a higher aliphatic group (i.e., at least four carbon atoms, preferably from about 6 to about 50 carbon atoms), a substituted higher aliphatic group, an alicyclic group, a heterocyclic group, a non-benzenoid aromatic group, and a substituted aromatic group. These compounds can be used as an emulsifier in emulsion polymerization.</p> |
