A furnace roll (14) for transferring steel strips from an annealing furnace has several spaced rings (48, 50, 52, 54, 56) along the body (16) of the roll. The rings have a width and diameter chosen such that the load on each ring is optimized depending upon the material of the strip and the ring material. The selected ring material is relatively insoluble with the strip material.
