The household knife has a flat blade (1) an adapter section (2) and a handle (3). The adapter section consists of a shaft (9) and has a locating slot (10) with a stop (11) which accepts the shaft (5) of the blade. A projection (12) in the locating slot fits into a slot (7) in the blade shaft with a ratchet action. A flexible tongue piece (13) which can hinge around a slot (15) cut in its end, rests against the projection and forms a spring retention mechanism against the shaft when it is inserted. At the blade end of the adapter section is a collar piece (16) which matches the shape of the blade end section and mates with it when the blade is inserted. The handle is then pushed on to the shaft (9) of the adapter element to create a press fit or a further anchoring pin can be provided for even greater security of fit.
