A device for gripping a contact lens for removal from or insertion into a user's eye has resilient deformable finger elements 12 for contacting the lens mounted at the free ends of a pair of spaced apart arms 9. The arms can be moved together by manual pressure against a resilient force tending to hold the arms 9 apart. The finger elements can be a snap fit onto the ends of arms (Fig. 5).
