The connector comprises two channel-sections (A, B), in which the bars forming the mat edges fit. At the base portion, the external width of one of the channels is less than the internal distance between the flanges of the other one, so that it will fit between them. A component (S) securing the channel-sections together passes through both. The connector can be of material such as high-grade steel, aluminium, plastic etc.
