A method and apparatus for manufacturing mattresses, including the steps of forming a coil spring (12) from wire, conditioning said coil spring (12) to reduce stresses formed therein, placing said coil spring (12) within pockets (123) to create elongate strings (55) of pocketed coil springs (124), attaching said elongate strings (55) to create innerspring constructions.
