The component can e.g. be sets of gear wheels of which one is driven and the other freewheels. The gears are made from a magnetic material or from plastics material. Magnetic discs (14,15) are mounted on the faces of the gears. The drives are polarised through the thickness of the disc, so that the outside of one disc on one wheel is North while that on the other gear is South. Alternatively the magnetic plates which are mounted on the gears can follow the contours of the teeth leaving a minimum amount of clearance. When the gearwheels are not under load, the magnetic attraction between the discs or plates will pull the teeth on the gears into engagement.
