A portable lifting apparatus (10) for lifting and transferring patients for use in combination with a sling. The apparatus (10) is stored in a retracted state by placement of supporting legs (16, 16A) and the lifting boom (34) in a folded position. The apparatus (10) can be quickly placed in an operating position by extension of the support legs (16, 16A) and lifting boom (34) which are then locked into position by the use of over-center latches on leg struts (22, 22A) and a boom crutch (36). Extension is verified by use of LED indicator lights located on a control panel (91). Separate motors (50, 66) are provided for placement of the legs (16, 16A), operating a hoist, and for angular placement of the boom unit (34). In a retracted state the apparatus (10) can be stored in a small area having a footprint no larger than the size of the base frame (12). Portability is provided by lockable wheels (14) positioned beneath the frame (12) which can be used in conjunction with hand brakes. |
