AIRBORNE VIDEO IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM AND METHOD

An airborne video identification system (10) acquires video images of objects such as seagoing vessels (12), digitizes (32, 100), stores (56, 100), and processes the images with a computer (18) under interactive operator associated textual data that are stored in a database. In the case of a seagoing vessel, the computer performs length, beam, and mast-height calculations (114) for use as a correlation pre-filter. Fuzzy logic (120) is applied to the images and correlation searches (122) are made in the database. Candidate objects found in the database are displayed (124) so a final unique identification decision (128) may be made by an operator. The database is a subset of a master database that is centrally maintained and updated. The subset database, which is selectively reloaded (144) onto the master database, is loaded into a removable disk pack (20).
