A multistage pump or compressor (30) includes a series of axial flow stages (32). Each axial stage (32) comprises an impeller (34) for imparting whirl to the pumped fluid in one direction and a stator (38) including vanes (40) for imparting whirl to the pumped fluid in the opposite direction. The stator vanes (40) define flow passages configured such that the fluid flows through the passages at substantially constant absolute velocity.
