PURPOSE: To reduce the recording time by interleaving audio data stored in a memory at the time of a recording mode and interleaving decoded audio data at the time of a reproduction mode. CONSTITUTION: When MD-formatted recording media MD1, CD2 of recording media 21 are to be reproduced, since data of the MD format are compressed data, a system controller 25 performs such control that data outputted from an encoder/decoder 31 are processed through an interleaver/de-interleaver 32, a memory controller 34, a DRAM 35, an audio compression/restoration unit 36, a multiplexer 38 and a digital-to-analog converter. When a CD-formatted recording medium CD1 is to be reproduced, the system controller 25 performs such control that data outputted from the encoder/decoder 31 are processed through an interpolation/muting unit 33, the multiplexer 38 and the digital-to- analog converter 39.
