The refractory closure element for a closure unit (20) at the outlet of a vessel (10) containing molten metal takes the form of a stator fixed in the outlet and a rotor which can rotate in a cylindrical sliding surface. The stator has a central longitudinal opening (25) and at least one side opening (26). The rotor has at least one opening corresponding to the side opening (26). The overlap of these openings is adjustable by rotation and/or axial displacement of the rotor. The closure element is characterised by the presence of a refractory insert (23) which at least partially forms the cylindrical sliding surface (27) and the side opening (26).
