An electromagnet (3) with a return spring (7) is attached to a connecting rod (4) which is pivoted (5) and connected at it's far end to a beam (6). The beam (6) is connected to the lower end of an elbow shaped latch (2) which is pivoted and normally secures the stretcher (9b). When the electromagnet is operated the connecting rod (4) is rotated and the beam (6) causes the pivoted latch (2) to open and release the stretcher (9b). The elecromagnet and the lower part of the operating mechanism are recessed into the floor (9) of the ambulance and provided with a lid (8).
