The installation for the automatic storage of trays (6) comprises an enclosure (1) containing rows (3,3A) of shelving (4). These rows are bordered by a passage (2) through which passes a transfer unit (5) for placing the trays in the shelves. Work stations (7,7A) are located at the end of the rows of shelves. The passage extends beyond the shelves so as to allow the transfer unit to reach the work station and retrieve or place a tray by transverse displacement of the extraction mechanism (8). The work station is equipped with a sealing flap (12) pivoted at its upper end and a safety flap (16) perpendicular to and connected to the sealing flap. Opening of the sealing flap , giving an operator (11) access to the work station, results in the blocking of communication between the passage and the work station. Closing of the sealing flap results in the opening of this communication.
