PURPOSE: To obtain a desired double speed reproduction screen by an arrangement wherein the tracking position of a head can be shifted freely through key input. CONSTITUTION: A microcomputer 19 determines that a track shift signal from a key input section 17 is a signal designating a preceding track. A reference level X preset in the microcomputer 19 is then added with a value corresponding to a first signalαand a new reference level (X+α) is determined. When a tracking error signal ATF-ER is applied to the microcomputer 19, the signal ATF-ER is sampled at an intermediate position of each pulse of a head switching signal HEAD-SWP preset in the microcomputer 19 an a tracking error is obtained. When a decision is made that the value thus obtained is not equal to the level (X+α), the microcomputer 19 drives a capstan motor 15 to equalize the levels. According to the arrangement, a desired double speed reproduction screen can be obtained.
