PURPOSE:To implement excellent image processing by discriminating accurately a background level of an image. CONSTITUTION:A 1st histogram representing a frequency of incidence of each density of a image signal representing an image density and a 2nd histogram representing an accumulated frequency of incidence are generated and stored in a RAM 113. A reference value to estimate a background level is obtained by the 2nd histogram and a reference value is reference from the 1st histogram to estimate the background level. Then a CPU 110 is used to allow a density conversion processing circuit 108 to process the image signal based on the estimated background level. |
