PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal display device capable of obtaining black- and-white display and color display with high contrast. CONSTITUTION:This device is constituted of a liquid crystal panel consisting of an STN liquid crystal layer, an upper phase difference plate 2 laminated on one surface of the liquid crystal panel, a lower phase difference plate 15 laminated on the other surface thereof, and an upper polarizing plate 1 and a lower polarizing plate 16 laminated so that they may interpose a liquid crystal display cell, the upper and the lower phase difference plates 2 an 15 in between. When it is assumed that DELTAn.d of the liquid crystal cell is [DELTAn.d]sel, DELTAn.d of the phase difference plate is [DELTAn.d]RET, relation [DELTAn.d]sel-[DELTAn.d]RET=100nm is satisfied. |
