Procedure for obtaining non-polar and polar turmeric extracts, and applications thereof. Obtaining the non-polar extract involves: a) extraction of the rhizomes with an organic solvent; b) filtration and evaporation of the extract to dryness; c) dissolving the resultant oleoresin while hot, precipitating, allowing to cool, and filtration of the solid; d) drying and recrystallization of the solid so as to obtain a product with a curcuminoid purity greater than 90 per cent. Obtaining the polar extract involves: a) extraction of the rhizomes with water at 50-70 degree C and b) filtration and evaporation of the water. Application in the manufacture of compositions and preparations which can be used as free-radical scavengers and anti-ageing agents.
