PURPOSE: To provide a system and method for operating a selective retroactive test for identifying which subset should be executed for testing the new version of a software system. CONSTITUTION: This software is divided into basic code sets (code elements) which can be calculated from a source code, and monitored during the execution of a program. Each test unit of the system software is executed, and this execution is monitored for the purpose of analyzing a relation between the system software and the test unit, and deciding the subsets of the code elements covered by the test unit. When the system software is changed, the changed code element set is identified. Afterwards, this changed code element set is compared with each code element set. When the change of one code element is identified, this test unit is re-executed.
