The dynamic routing in a communication network should be adapted to the given traffic load in the network in a way which optimizes network throughput. The routing as per the invention solves this problem by means of a route fan to hold alternate routes for overflow traffic, such that an alternate route held in the route fan is removed from the route fan without replacement as soon as it is determined that this alternate route is no longer available.
