A quick fastening system for releasably retaining a rotary shaft 27 in a yoke 20 of a universal joint, comprises a cylinder 11 fixed to the yoke 20 and provided with a first bore 34 accommodating a ball 19 which engages in a locking groove 29 in the shaft 27 in the retaining condition (Figure 2), and a second bore 34a accommodating a ball 19a which is restrained from outward movement by a spring biased release sleeve 12. When the release sleeve 12 is moved to the release condition (Figure 3), a spring biased sleeve 15 urges the ball 19a outwards to hold the release sleeve 12 in that position, and the ball 19 is forced out of the locking groove 29 by a spring urged plunger 16. The release sleeve 12 is keyed to the cylinder 11.
