Radially arranged troughs (11a) in the combustion space (11) extend beyond the piston diameter and expand the annular gap (15) between piston (18) and engine block. The troughs (11a) are rounded and reduce the interval between compression ring (16) and combustion space (11). The top land (14) of the piston is rounded and extends into the combustion space of the engine cylinder block (13), the piston top (18a) forms a shallow bowl and the top of the combustion space is of a corresponding undulating cross-section giving an approx. constant gap between the piston top and the head. The sparkplugs etc. (10) ignite the fresh mixture in the periphery of the combustion space, using the inlet valve (7) to feed the fresh gas mixture in coaxial to the central axis of the piston 18 mm. The vorticisers (5) produce a cyclone in a mixture preparation chamber (6) so as to fan fuel out into the combustion space (11) once drawn in past the inlet valve (7).
