The invention relates to a process for the dewatering of liquid sludge in which the sludge is treated with precipitant additives. The sludge is treated with additives which contain at least one magnesium compound and, possibly, one or more phosphates. As a result of this conditioning, the ammonium contents are partially or substantially precipitated as magnesium ammonium phosphate. The sludge thus preconditioned is then dewatered on a dewatering unit. A filtrate having reduced nutrient load and a dewatered sludge aggregate having an elevated nutrient supply are withdrawn from the dewatering device. The filtrate is fed to a sewage treatment plant and can be treated by the CAFR process for further precipitation of ammonium.
