The application describes a beam sling for lifting structural members such as beams, the sling comprising a lifting strap (1) and a main body (2) through which the lifting strap can pass in order to form a loop, with one end of the strap locating in a slot (5) in the body member. The said one end of the strap (1) has an aperture (6) and the main body (2) includes a pin (7) which can move between a first position bridging the slot (5) and a second position free of the slot, whereby the apertured end of the strap can be held in the slot (5) by the pin (7). The pin (7) can be moved from the first to the second position by means of a rotational movement and an elongate member (9, 10) is provided to generate the rotational movement from a remote position.
