The appts. for making up large fabric sections and especially for awnings and the like, with stitching and/or cutting the edges, has two cutter and/or sewing heads (2,5) at a variable gap next to each other in the sewing direction (15). A winding holder takes an unworked roll (18) of material, and a motor-driven winding roller station takes up the made-up fabric in a roll after the cutter and/or sewing heads (2,5) in the sewing direction (15). Also claimed is a fabric making-up operation where the material is held in a roll to be taken off for the outer edges to pass through cutter and/or sewing heads. Directly after cutting and/or stitching, the fabric is wound into a roll for delivery.
