Cellular pump for engine lubrication

The central piston guide pin (16) is hollow to enclose the engaged compression spring and is recessed (7) at one end to the side and here engaged by the adjuster (3), this designed as a pin forming part of the adjusting ring (4) of the cellular pump. The piston is made up of several part pistons making mutually limiting face contact assisted by piston part endstops. The rotation of the rotor and the eccentricity of the adjuster ring are arranged so that the pump pressure space lies radially outside the adjuster ring and is here entered directly by the adjuster piston (1). The piston pressure is necessarily balanced by the re-set spring, typically using a stepped design of piston, eg. ring (19) and central pin (16). The use of the ring, pin and piston end recess dispenses with conventional axial alignment in a close-fitting design.
